Chapter 13: At the Counter

Millie drove us to the county building with the heat on high and the finger monitor in Margot's lap.

It was nine forty on Monday morning.

Margot wore the good coat over a hospital sweatshirt, and her face was the colour of paper.

She stopped twice on the front steps.

"I'm fine," she said, both times.

"I know," I said, and held the door.

In the corner of my eye the panel burned red.

REMOVAL IN 2 HOURS, 2 MINUTES.

The clerk's office was a long counter under a flag, and the woman behind it looked like she had seen everything twice.

"You have a ten o'clock," she said. "License and ceremony."

"Yes," Margot said. "Both."

"The same two people from last week's divorce." The clerk's mouth twitched. "You'd be amazed how often."

Margot signed the form with a hand that shook.

I signed under her, and neither of us said anything.

The clerk typed, and stopped, and frowned at her screen.

"There's a notice on this file," she said. "Filed an hour ago by the other party."

"What other party?" Margot said.

The doors banged open behind us.

"Right here, babe!"

Brody came across the lobby with his phone held high and a bandage on his wrist that had not been there on Friday.

Jocelyn walked a step behind him, and behind her came a man in a navy suit with a folder.

"Hey, family," Brody told the phone. "We're at the county clerk. My girlfriend is about to make the worst mistake of her life."

"Turn it off," I said.

"Make me. Oh wait, you tried that. It's in the police report."

"Mr. Keene," said the man in the navy suit. He laid the folder on the counter. "I represent Mr. Keene. My client holds a signed agreement from Ms. Treharne."

He slid out a page.

I could see the signature from where I stood, and I could see the date.

"On Wednesday at seven forty p.m.," the lawyer said, "Ms. Treharne agreed not to marry anyone but my client for twelve months. The penalty is five million dollars."
