Chapter 15: Ask Me Later

Margot's POV

He told me everything, sitting on the edge of the hospital chair with his hands between his knees.

He started with a stairwell three years ago and a voice that offered him a deal.

He told me about the blue panel that only he could see.

He told me the Husband System scored every task he did for me, and that I had lived because he said yes before the voice finished talking.

I listened to the heart monitor and did not interrupt.

Then he told me about the fine print.

"If the marriage ended in court, I'd be removed seven days later," Nolan said. "Nobody would remember me. And your heart would go back to what it was."

I laughed.

It was not a kind sound.

"You hit your head at the counter," I said.

"I didn't."

"There's a panel. A voice. Points."

"I know how it sounds."

"You signed a fake divorce because of a video game."

"I signed it because you asked me to, and because it said I'd be gone in a week." He did not raise his voice. "I didn't know what it would do to you until Wednesday. After that I couldn't tell you. If I told you, the timer went to zero."

"That's convenient."

"It's not convenient. I lay awake for four nights."

I turned my face to the window.

It was dusk, and the parking lot lights were coming on one at a time.

I wanted him to be lying.

If he was lying, I was only a woman whose husband had been strange for a week.

If he was telling the truth, I had been alive for three years on a deal I never agreed to.

"Get the doctor," I said.

He went out.

The cardiologist came in with his hands in his coat pockets, and he looked at Nolan's face before he looked at mine.

"Ms. Treharne."

"Three years ago I was dying," I said. "Then I woke up fine. You said you had no explanation."
