Chapter 17: Every Camera in the Room

The launch was held in a glass ballroom downtown, and by seven on Friday it held two hundred people and a screen as big as a garage door.

I stood at the back in my only suit.

Margot stood at the front in a long grey coat, with her scarf off and the scar showing.

She had asked her lawyer to leave Brody's name on the guest list.

"I want him inside," she'd said. "I want a deputy on the door and every sponsor in the room."

At seven fifteen he came in.

He had a phone on a gimbal and a laptop under his arm, and the red light was on.

"Hey, family," he said. "I'm live at Margot Treharne's big night. She doesn't want you to see what I brought."

Two deputies in plain clothes stepped off the wall, and Margot lifted one finger.

They stopped.

"Let him," she said.

Brody smiled and walked up the steps to the stage, and nobody stopped him.

He plugged the laptop into the screen.

"A couple of weeks ago she was a victim," he said to the room. "Now she's a saint. So here's what she said to me in March, in a hotel, when she thought it was just us."

He pressed a key.

The screen lit.

It was a hotel suite, and Margot sat on a white sofa with a glass of wine and her feet up.

Her laugh filled the ballroom.

"Nolan?" the Margot on the screen said. "Oh, he's an appliance. You press a button, dinner comes out. He'd sign anything I put in front of him. He's not a husband, babe, he's staff."

Brody laughed on the recording, and so did she.

Nobody in the ballroom made a sound.

I stood very still at the back with my hands at my sides.

I had known what she thought of me.

I had not known it would sound like that, in her own laugh, over two hundred heads.

The Margot on the screen reached for her glass.

The Margot on the stage walked up to the microphone.
