Chapter 20: Sunday at Millie's

Millie's flat was full on Sunday night, and four of the guests were in uniform.

Her paramedic crew had brought a casserole, a bag of ice and a cake from the grocery store.

The table was my sister's folding table with a card table pushed against it.

Margot sat at the end, in the chair Millie had pointed to, with her hands in her lap.

She had been silent for half an hour.

"Okay," Millie said, and put down her fork. "Everybody quiet. I have something to say to the guest of honor."

The room went still.

"Millie," I said.

"Sit down, I've waited six years."

Margot looked up.

"Go ahead," she said.

"Six years ago you married my brother at a courthouse in a dress you borrowed," Millie said. "I thought, good, she's got a sense of humor."

A paramedic by the stove snorted.

"You came to Thanksgiving once. You ate his pecan pie and said it was fine."

"It was fine," Margot said.

"It was a fifteen-hour pie. He got up at four to make it."

Margot flinched.

"You never learned his favorite food. It's pie. It's any pie. You never asked what he made in the shop. You called him on his birthday and talked for four minutes about your day."

"I know."

"And last week you stood in my kitchen and asked my brother to disappear for a man with a ring light."

"I know that too."

"You want to know what I thought, watching you?" Millie leaned forward. "I thought, if she looks at him once, really looks, she'll stop. And you didn't. For six years."

The room was very quiet.

Margot did not look away.

"You're right," she said. "Every word. I'd like to say something back."

"Fine."

"Thank you for saying it to my face. Nobody in my whole life has done that." Her voice shook. "I'm going to spend the rest of it earning pie."
