Chapter 21: The Bend
"Why are you telling me?" I said.
"Because I want him to lose." Darcy wiped her nose on her sleeve. "Not you. Him."
"Will you say it again? Out loud, to somebody who isn't me?"
She looked at the door.
"He keeps the book in his jacket now," she said instead. "His dad's book. He doesn't trust his own guys with it."
Then she left.
I called Jesse from the library steps, in the snow.
I didn't plan what to say.
I told him all of it.
He was quiet for a long time.
"I'm still racing," he said.
"I know."
"You're not going to ask me not to?"
"Do you want me to?"
"No."
"Then I'm not."
He nodded slowly.
"Now that I know where he'll come from," he said, "I know where not to be."
So I did the only thing that was mine to do.
The next morning I walked into the campus police office with my phone and Bea.
I showed the officer at the front desk the brake line video.
The old man saying, That's a blade.
Darcy's story with the stolen bike.
The officer was a tired woman with a grey braid.
She watched all of it twice.
