There was a stair at the back of the cellar, narrow and worn into dips.

I knew where it went.

I stood up.

I didn't look at the Grey.

I walked to the bottom step and started to climb, slow.

Behind me, claws clicked on stone.

He was following.

At the top was a small door, and behind it, the dark of the minstrels' gallery over the great hall.

I crouched behind the rail.

The Grey lay down beside me in the shadows, panting.

Below us, every pack in the east had come.

They filled the pews and the aisles and stood three deep along the walls.

Through the new window over the dais, the moon hung over the lake, and it was going red at the edge.

Raife sat in the King's chair at the High Table, with the council around him and the leather Charter Book closed in front of him.

Araminta sat at the end of the front pew, alone, in black.

And in the middle of the flagstones, where the Lot bowl had been, stood Caspian.

His hands were in front of him.

There were cuffs on his wrists.
