Chapter 28: The Old King
Caspian moved before anyone else did.
He walked across the flagstones in his silver cuffs and stood in front of his father.
"Then shoot through me," he said.
The guards froze with their rifles up.
"The King is unwell," Raife said. "Go around him."
"Lower them," said the old man in tweed.
Behind me, the pews creaked.
The redhead stood up. The blond senior stood up with his cast.
Then a row of old wolves from the north, and a family from Maine, and half the senior table.
Pew by pew, the packs got to their feet.
The guards looked at the hall.
They lowered the rifles.
The Grey was shaking against the back of my legs.
I knelt down on the cold flagstones with my back to him, the way I'd knelt on the mat.
"Cas," I said quietly. "Kneel down. Next to me. Don't look at him."
He knelt in his cuffs.
"Now call him," I said. "Like your wolf. Don't drag. Call."
"Dad," Caspian said.
The Grey's breathing changed.
"Dad. It's Cas. Come home."
Behind us I heard the fur rustle and strain.
I heard the whine start, the one from the barn, the one that meant it hurt.
