Chapter 19: Barred

I got to him first.

I went down on my knees on the gallery steps and turned his head to the side so he wouldn't choke.

"Sir. Sir, can you hear me?"

His jaw was locked. His eyes kept rolling gold and back.

Pulse at the neck, racing and thready.

"Titus, his airway. Nero, his legs, keep them up. Somebody call the bay."

Titus was already beside me. Nero had his father's ankles.

Mom knelt at his head with her hands on his face, saying his first name over and over.

"Step away from him, Tenley."

The Royal Physician stood over us.

"He's seizing," I said. "He needs..."

"He needs his physician. You're suspended." His voice rang off the stone. "Remove her, please."

Two of Cash's lieutenants came down the steps.

Hadrian stood up between them and me.

"Touch her," he said quietly, "and you'll both be scrubbing the parade ground until the spring."

They stopped.

The Commander's back arched off the step.

I didn't move my hands from his head.

The Royal Physician crouched on the other side of him and opened his bag.
