Chapter 13: Back Pay
The list was in pencil, with every month ruled off.
Cook, June through October.
Gardener, driver, two maids, the same.
My mother's name sat at the top, and beside it a number I had to read three times.
At the bottom, circled twice, he had written 23,650.
"Is that everyone?" I said.
"It's everyone who still answers the door."
"How long have you known?"
"The driver told me in August."
He kept his eyes on the street.
"He asked if he should look for other work, and I said no, Windward would sort it out."
His jaw moved.
"That is the worst sentence I have ever said to a person."
I turned the page over.
"I'll pay it," I said. "Tonight. I'll go to the credit union when it opens."
"No."
"Garrick."
"No, Sol."
"It's not for you," I said. "It's for my mother. You don't get a vote on what I give my mother."
"That's true," he said. "I don't."
That stopped me.
"But she told you she'd starve first," he said. "You told me so yourself, an hour ago, with your coat half on."
"She'll never know where it came from."
