Chapter 19: The Healer's Room
Rupert caught him before his face hit the boards.
"Lee. Lee!"
"Don't roll him," I said. "Not on his back. On his side. Get the blanket off the burn."
I was on my knees beside him before I'd decided to be.
His pulse was fast and thin under my fingers.
His skin, which had always burned, was cool.
"Healer," I said.
The tiny old woman was already there, holding her lantern over his back.
She looked for a long time.
"He ran too long in the fire," she said. "Wolves heal from what they've got. He's got nothing left."
"Then we give him something."
She looked at me sideways.
"Human," she said. "Bring your bag."
They carried him up to the healer's room on a door taken off its hinges.
It was the same room where I'd brought the north shore boy, a low stone room that smelled of pine sap and iodine.
The Alpha was in the next bed with his side wrapped in wet sheets.
The old man was breathing on my oxygen in the corner.
The children had gone home with their mothers to the Hall's kitchen, where the cook was feeding them pancakes.
