Chapter 20: The November Moon
They came all day.
Trucks and black cars came up the lake road, through the gate my partner had cut.
By nine that night sixty Alphas sat around the long stone table in the Moon Hall.

The press filled the gallery.
I stood near the dais in my navy uniform, straight from the healer's room.
Leander stood beside me in a loose black shirt over his bandages.
He was gray in the face and wouldn't sit.
My mother stood on my other side.
Rupert stood behind us with a laptop under his arm.
Sybil struck the staff three times, and the moonstone lit.

She turned and looked straight at me.
"A human cut the Crown's gate with bolt cutters. She drove a human truck across the Crown's land against the Speaker's order. Her mother has been trying to set the King's crown on her own head ever since."
