Chapter 11: The Rehearsal

Inga called on Tuesday the twenty-seventh, four days before the party, while I was standing in Carmine's kitchen in his shirt, eating toast over the sink.

"Are you alive?" she said.

"I'm alive."

"You sound alive. You sound like a woman who has been up to something."

"Inga."

"I'm only saying. Do you want me to come? I can close the shop."

"The ovens are fine. Your friend with the rolling pin could be there Saturday."

I laughed, and it surprised me.

"Saturday," I said. "I'll text you where."

"Wear something that fits. And bring your elbows."

She hung up before I could thank her.

The note had come with the morning paper, slipped under the penthouse door.

It was written on hotel stationery in a small neat hand.

The chapel at the Grand. Noon. Please come alone. I will be praying for forty minutes.

I went at noon.

The chapel was a narrow room on the mezzanine, with six pews and a gold cross and a smell of old candles.

Nico's fiancee knelt at the front in a gray coat, with her head bowed over her hands.

I slid in beside her.

She didn't look up.

"They watch me," she said quietly. "Everywhere but here. Even Nico respects a chapel."

"You wanted to talk."

"I want out."

"Out of what?"

"Of him." She raised her face, and I saw the faint yellow shadow along her jaw that no makeup had covered.
