Room 1412 had new carpet and a new bed.
The ice bucket sat on the same table by the window, empty and dry.
I stopped in the doorway, and Inga stopped behind me.
"I'll be in the hall," she said. "If you scream, I come in with the lamp."
"I won't scream."
"Then if you stop talking."
I went in, and she let the door close to an inch.
Nico shut the minibar he had been looking into and held out a small bottle of water.
I didn't take it.
"You asked why," he said. "I'll start at the dinner, because that's where it started."
"The rehearsal dinner, two years before you ever carried a child. You walked in with your hair down."
"I told you that."
"I went home that night and couldn't sleep."
"So I made a list of what Carmine had that I did not."
"It was a short list. It was you."
He sat on the edge of the bed, where the woman had sat, and he spoke in a calm friendly voice.
