Chapter 16: The Confession
The Table met at noon in the back room of a social club on Halsted Street, in Bridgeport.
I had grown up six blocks from it and never once been allowed through the front door.
It was a long room with a green felt table, a crucifix and a window painted shut.
The capos sat along the sides, in their good suits.
Sergio sat at the head with his oxygen tank beside him, uncovered now, because he no longer troubled to hide it.
Nico's chair, on his father's left, was empty.
Carmine's chair, on the right, was empty too, because he stood in the middle of the floor with his hands at his sides.
I stood at the wall by the door with Inga.
"Women do not sit at the Table," one of the capos said, with his eyes on me.
"I am not sitting," I said. "I am the one it happened to."
"Let her stand," said the capo with the white mustache.
