Eben's POV
The county plow was doing twelve miles an hour down Route 73, and I was behind it.
I had left Spruce Head at ten past four.
I'd been ready at four.
I had shaved, and put on a clean shirt, and sat in the truck in my father's dooryard with the engine running, watching the clock on the dash.
My father had stood on the porch in his pajama top with his arms folded.
"Go," he'd said, at four ten.
"It's early."
"Go early. Ice."
He had been right.
A foot of new snow had come down overnight.
The road was a single white lane between banks, and at half past five a plow pulled out of a side road in front of me with its orange light going around.
I leaned on the horn.
He did not care.
I watched the mailboxes go past.
It was twelve minutes before I could pass him, and by then it was five forty-eight.
I drove the last four miles with the truck's back end sliding and my hands slick on the wheel.
I came into Rockland through the dark streets at fifty past five and turned onto Union.
The transportation center is a low brick building with a bus shelter and a bench.
I saw the bus before I saw anything else.
It was a big silver coach with its lights on, idling at the curb, and the doors were folding shut.
I stood on the brake.
I jumped out of the truck without turning it off and ran.
"Wait," I said. "Hey. Wait!"
I ran across the lot in the dark, slipping on the packed snow, with my cap gone and my coat open.
