Chapter 11: The Library
Lydia shut the green room door behind her and stood with her back against it.
"Tell me it's not true," Nolan said again.
"I can't."
It was very quiet in the room.
She said it flat, without any attempt to soften it.
"The desk move," he said.
"Mine."
"The staff dinner that first Christmas."
"Mine. I wrote the invitation on my father's letterhead and signed his name."
"The thermos."
"Mine."
"The notes."
She closed her eyes for a moment.
"I used to write them in the Institute library, at the table by the window. That's why I signed them that way. You were always in there studying for the board exam, three tables over."
He remembered the library.
He remembered the table by the window and a girl in a gray sweater, with her hair down, who had never once looked up from her book.
"You sat three tables from me," he said.
"For two months."
"And wrote me notes."
"I couldn't talk to you. I was twenty and I'd never asked anyone for anything." She laughed, and it was not a real laugh. "I only had one move, and it was putting you where I could see you."
"Why?"
"The first week of the internship, you stayed past midnight in the data room to hand-copy a dead intern's logs, so his family would have them. You didn't tell anyone. You never got a name on the file." Her voice cracked on it, and she kept going. "I watched you do it through the glass. I thought, that's the only person in this building who isn't playing something."
