Chapter 13: The Board Room
The fourth floor of the Portland Marriott had a conference room with a long walnut table and a view of a parking structure.
Nolan stopped outside the double doors at ten past two, with Joan beside him, and one door was open a hand's width.
He did not go in.
He wanted to see her first, without her knowing he could.
Nine Board members sat along the table in dark suits.
Harold Wexford sat at the head, because the Institute's director always did.
Leland Crewe sat on his right, in the pressed gray jacket, with a glass of water and an easy face.
Russell stood against the wall by the window, in a sport coat that did not fit him, looking at the carpet.
Lydia stood alone at the foot of the table.
She wore the gray wool coat she had worn on the Branch steps.
Beside her on a chair sat a cardboard box, taped twice, with a courier's label on the side.
"Seven years of bench logs," she said. "The originals. My building manager put them on the red-eye last night, and they came up from the airport an hour ago."
She had arranged that Sunday, Nolan realized, while he was still asleep in the cabin.
He had not known she was awake.
She lifted the lid and took out a black notebook and set it in front of the nearest Board member.
"Every monthly entry is in Nolan Ridley's handwriting. Every one is dated and countersigned by me. The threshold, the config changes, the false-positive tuning. The Deep Field signal is in the March entry of the fourth notebook."
