Chapter 12: Her Own Photographs

Valerie held the envelope out to Colton.

"Open it," she said.

He didn't move.

She sighed, slid out a stack of glossy prints and fanned them across the hood of her car.

There I was on my own porch with his mouth on my throat.

There we were in the garage, his hand under my blazer.

There we were at the hospice, laughing in the rain.

"Eleven days," Valerie said. "The photographer is thorough."

Colton looked at them without expression.

"You had me followed."

"I had her followed," Valerie said sweetly. "You were just standing next to her. Do you know what the gossip blogs will do with these? 'Billionaire Chairman and the Private Eye He Hired to Find His Own Wife.'"

"What do you want?"

"Very little." She tucked a strand of platinum hair behind her ear. "End it tonight. Announce our engagement Monday at the harbor lunch. Sign the divorce when Dennis brings you a better candidate. And I'll burn every one of these."

"And her?"

"She's fired. She can go back to catching cheaters." Valerie's pale eyes slid to me. "Though I'm told she's very flexible about what she catches."

I stepped forward with the blanket around my shoulders.

"Tell him the rest," I said.

Valerie went still.

"The rest of what?"

"Tell him who paid for the actress."

Colton turned his head slowly.

"Actress?" he said.

"You didn't mention that, Valerie." I kept my voice level. "That Friday, in your father's conference room. The woman in the grey cardigan. The one who didn't know what the bride wore."

"I don't know what she's talking about."
