Chapter 13: The Pen
On Sunday afternoon Stefan and I carried my grandmother's ruined living room rug out to the curb.
It had soaked up a week of burst pipe and weighed more than both of us.
Stefan took the heavy end without being asked, and his bad knee made him wince on the porch step.
"Put it down," I said.
"I've got it."
"Stefan."
"I've got it, Winona."
We dropped it on the grass together, and I was laughing and out of breath when Blaine's truck turned onto Alder Street.
He parked across the driveway so we couldn't leave.
He climbed out in his good jacket with a blue folder under his arm.
He looked at Stefan, and then at the rug, and then at me.
"Having a nice day?" he said.
"Say what you came to say."
"Alone."
"He stays."
Stefan wiped his hands on his jeans and stood at the foot of the porch steps, saying nothing.
Blaine shrugged and opened the folder.
"It's a quitclaim deed. All it does is put my name on this house next to yours."
"Why?"
"The shop's in a tight spot. The bank wants more collateral for the line of credit, and I can't have the bank looking at a house you're keeping from me."
"My grandmother left it to me, Blaine. Me alone."
"You're my wife."
"For now."
His jaw moved.
He took a pen out of his jacket and held it toward me.
"Sign it, and I'll let the rest of this go. The coach thing, the talking in town. I'll even call off the board."
I looked at the pen.
"What board?"
"Ask Ostrow." He didn't turn his head. "Ask him what's on the agenda for the ninth."
