Chapter 7: The Balcony

Darian drove me back to the cliff house without asking one question.

I held two bags on my lap and watched the harbor lights go by.

At the house I tried to carry both bags up the front steps, and the zipper of the second one split.

A hairpin shot out of it, and then a stack of old postcards, and I scooped for them on the stone and scraped my palm on a rose thorn that had come home in my coat pocket.

"You are bleeding," Darian said.

"It's a scratch."

"Give it to me."

I should have said no.

I put my hand in his.

He turned my palm toward the porch light and studied the thin red line across it.

His thumb moved up the inside of my wrist, very slowly.

A drop of blood swelled and ran down toward my pulse.

I saw his jaw lock.

I saw the points of his teeth show against his lower lip for one moment, and then he shut his mouth.

He didn't move.

"Does it hurt?" he asked, in a voice that was rougher than before.

"No."

"Good."

He pulled a folded handkerchief from his coat and wrapped it over my palm, tight, with his fingers over mine.

Then he took me through the house to the glass doors on the second floor and out onto the balcony.

The sea was black below us, with a line of white where it broke on the rocks.

The wind smelled like salt and cedar.

I leaned on the stone rail and he stood close behind me, close enough that I felt the cold coming off his coat.
