Chapter 24: The Tide Line
They held the memorial at low tide, on the sand below the headland.
Both packs came.
Ashfall stood on the north side of the beach, and Saltmarsh on the south, and between them there was a clear strip of wet sand, wide enough for a stone.
The stone lay at the top of the beach on a cart.
It was grey granite, as long as a man, and the masons had cut one line into its face.
Eli. Son of Wynne.
Four men stepped forward to lift it.
"No," Wynne said.
They stopped.
She walked to the cart in her plain black coat, with her hair tied back, and put both arms around the granite.
She had not told anyone she would do this.
Bram stood at the edge of the crowd and did not move to help.
She had asked him not to, the night before, and he had said only, "I'll be where you can see me."
She took the weight.
It came up off the cart against her chest, cold and enormous, and she felt every muscle in her back take it.
It was the strength she had spent eight years pouring into someone else.
It was hers now.
She carried it down the sand.
Nobody spoke.
Her boots sank to the ankle, and the stone pressed against her ribs, and the wind pulled at her coat.
She did not stop.
She walked past the place where the dune path met the beach, and past the flat rock where Calla had sat.
