We walked into the Hearth Barn at noon on the shortest day of the year, with the ice cracking under our boots.

A hundred and fifty wolves sat on the long benches in their coats, and the stove at the far end was roaring.

Tobe walked on my right, and Jubal walked on my left, and each of them had a hand against my back.

Tobe's was flat between my shoulder blades, and Jubal's thumb moved once along my spine.

I felt both of them through the bond, steady and ready, and I kept my chin up.

Kenton sat in my father's chair at the head of the room.

Sissy stood at his elbow in a clean blue dress, with her hands folded and her eyes lowered.

Her neck was bare, and she touched it when she saw me.

"Shyla," Kenton said, with his wide easy smile. "Honey. We can settle this kindly. Nobody wants a scene."

"Then you shouldn't have called one," I said.

"Name your table, or hand over the chain," he said, loudly, to the room. "That's the law."

"I know the law."

The old man by the stove looked at his coffee.

The nine women of the quilt circle sat together at the long table, and a cloth lay over something heaped in front of them.

The oldest woman held up my mother's chain by one finger, so the pearl swung in the light, and she did not smile.
