Chapter 8: The Gravel Bar

On Thursday the weather turned warm and stupid, seventy-four degrees in late October, and I wanted to see them both in daylight.

Granny's land ran down a slope of broom sedge to the Jacks Fork, where a gravel bar stuck out into the current.

Tobe carried the quilt and a cooler.

Jubal carried nothing and talked the whole way.

"I'm just saying a man could catch a smallmouth down here," he said. "If a man had a line."

"You have a line," Tobe said.

"I have an entire tackle box. I left it in the truck on purpose."

"Why?"

"Because I'm not going to fish," Jubal said. "Let's not pretend."

I spread the quilt on the warm gravel.

The river was green and clear and loud over the rocks, and the sky was a hard blue.

I took off my shirt first, then my boots, and then everything else.

When I looked up, they had both stopped walking.

"In the sun," I said. "I want to see you."

Tobe took off his flannel.

Jubal took off his boots, then his shirt with the buttoned cuffs, folding it carefully, and he laid it on the quilt.

The leather band stayed on his left wrist, as it always did.

I sat on the edge of the blanket with my feet in the shallows, and Jubal dropped down beside me.

For a while we sat there, the three of us, with the sun on our shoulders.
