Chapter 4: The Offer
That one word was still in my head by evening, in a voice I didn't know.
I hadn't told Keely. I hadn't told anyone.
At nine that night someone knocked on the door of the room I'd lived in for six years.
Keely opened it a hand's width, looked, and turned back to me with her eyebrows high.
"The deputy commander. Alone. He says it's about the file."
"Let him in. Then go and eat something."
"I'll be in the next room with my ear to the wall," Keely said, and went.
Caleb Ostrow stopped just inside the door and took his cap off.
He looked at the trunks stacked by the wall, at the cleared dressing table and at the pendant I had left on it.
"You're packing," he said.
"I'm sorting. Sit down, Deputy Commander. You're making the room look untidy."
He sat on the edge of the hard chair with his hands on his knees.
The voice stayed silent while he was in the room, and I couldn't tell whether that was worse.
"I came to say something before you hear it from anyone else," he said. "I never asked for you."
"You said that in the corridor."
"I'll say it properly." He looked up. "Alastair put the match to me three weeks ago, before the coronation. I told him no. He asked again, and I told him no again."
"And the second time?"
"He said it was an order from my Alpha."
I waited.
"I'm a soldier. I take orders. But I don't take a wife the way I take a post, and I certainly don't take someone else's." His jaw was tight. "He's handing you off like a job he's finished with. I won't be the man who takes you."
