Chapter 16: The Test Run
The course ran seven miles through the snow line, up the pass ridge and back down to the fire.
At nine o'clock the next night, five packs stood in a ring on the meadow and watched me stretch my calves.
The three runners were already lined up.
One was a long-legged woman who ran marathons for fun, and one was a rancher's son.
The third was a skinny boy of twenty-one from the highest pack in the range.
He had once run down an elk on foot and told no one.
They looked at me.
Soren stood at the edge of the firelight with his hands at his sides.
I'd told him to stay there, and I knew what it cost him.
I walked over, took his face in my hands, and kissed him in front of all five packs.
"If you follow me, I'll forfeit," I said into his mouth.
"I'll be at the fire."
"Be good."
"I'll try."
The north fork Alpha raised his arm.
"Go!" he shouted, and the dark opened.
The skinny boy took the lead in the first quarter mile.
