Chapter 21: Fire on the Ridge
The mill yard was full of people before I got there.
Wolves stood in the dark in their nightclothes with the orange glow on their faces.
Nobody was doing anything, because nobody knew what to do.
Six summers of fire had taught me what a crowd looks like in the first ten minutes.
It looks like this.
I climbed onto the bed of a flatbed truck.
"Listen to me!" I shouted. "Everybody who can hear me, close in!"
They closed in.
"I jumped fires for six seasons. I'm going to tell you what to do, and you'll do it."
"Yes, Alpha," the old man in the feed cap called out.
Somebody laughed, wildly.
"The wind is east, and it's coming down the Ridge toward the Halvorsen stand and the town below it."
"We can't stop the top. We stop the flank."
I pointed.
"Saws and pulaskis from the mill shop to the creek road. Every digger in a line, ten feet apart."
"Dig it to bare dirt, three feet wide, and don't stop for the heat."
