Chapter 7: Wednesday Supper
"Wednesday supper is at six," Orrin Dahl said, gently, on my father's porch.
"I'd like you to answer for it in front of your own people."
"What people?" I said.
"The pack, Miss Halvorsen. It's tradition."
He was daring me.
He thought I'd run, or break, or hit him on the porch of the cabin his crew had been cutting up for a week.
"I'll be there," I said.
His smile widened a fraction.
"Wear something nice," said Orrin.
Soren stood beside me with his hands loose at his sides, and I could feel his heartbeat in my own right palm.
The patrolmen left.
The lawyer lingered a moment, looked at the sawdust in my hair, and went after them.
"Don't tell them anything," I said to Soren when the truck was gone. "Not the pages, not Jorgen."
"I won't."
"Whatever he says tonight."
"I won't."
His eyes darkened, but he gave a single nod.
The pack hall at six was bright and hot and smelled like two hundred people's casseroles.
