Chapter 10: You Knew

I did not knock.

I carried Judith's ledger under one arm and the grey folder under the other, and I pushed his study door open with my shoulder.

He was at the desk with no lamp lit, only the window.

He stood up at once.

I threw the folder at his chest.

It hit him and burst open, and four years of Sundays slid across the floor.

"You knew," I said.

"Yes."

"You smelled me at a treaty, and you knew where I lived, and you knew what I ate, and you let me stay in that kitchen."

He did not pick up the papers.

"I'm going to tell you what I was thinking," he said. "It will not sound good."

"Try."

"I thought you were another wolf's mate."

"You were told."

"I was told by two people I had no reason to doubt. A king cannot take another wolf's fated mate. And if a bond is broken from the outside, the one who is torn away can die of it."

"So you wrote a report every Sunday."

"So I wrote a report every Sunday," he said, and his jaw tightened. "I told myself that was restraint."

"Was it?"

"It was part restraint. Part fear."

That surprised me.

"If you were happy with him," he said, "I wanted to find out from a distance, in a letter. I did not want to see it."

I looked down at the pages on the floor.

I picked one up, and I knew the one.

"Fever," I read aloud. "Rooke's physician did not come."

"Read the line under it."

My eyes moved down.

There was a second line, in smaller ink.

Crown physician sent. Turned away at the door. Mistress of the house reports the girl is resting.
