Chapter 21: Mark Me First
Piers's POV
The silver took two days to leave my blood.
Macy sat beside the bed for most of them.
She changed the dressing on my side herself and would not let the healer touch it.
On the second night she locked the door.
"You said you'd tell me everything," she said.
"I've told you everything."
"Not about Strake. What he said at the post."
"I don't know what he meant." I turned my head on the pillow to look at her. "That is the whole of it. The old wolves let the Blaster live. I never heard it before. I'll find out, and you'll hear it the hour I do."
She studied my face.
I let her.
I had nothing left to put in front of it.
"Good," she said.
She sat on the edge of the bed and took off her boots.
"There's one more thing I want to say," I said.
"Say it."
"A true-mate mark takes two. Your yes, and then my bite on your shoulder. I have kept that from you in a way that was nearly a lie, because I wanted you to choose it with the whole truth in your hand."
"You told me the truth in the end."
"I want you to take the first bite." I held her gaze. "Mark me, when you choose. You have teeth, and my neck is here. Then I answer to you for the rest of my life, and no wolf in this house will say otherwise."
She went very still.
"That's not how it works."
"It is how I want it to work."
"You can't be marked by a human."
"I can be marked by you."
Her eyes went bright.
"Piers," she said. "You are an idiot."
"Yes."
"I haven't said I'm ready."
"I know."
"I'm going to touch you first, though."
"Please," I said, and I heard my voice break on it.
She drew the blanket down to my hips.
The bandage was white against my ribs.
She put her palm flat over my heart and held it there.
I closed my eyes.
