Chapter 7: Wolf-Lover

Selma was standing at the gate in last night's green blouse, with one eye swollen shut and her lip split in two places.

Two Keep warriors had their hands on her arms.

"Let her in," I said.

They looked at the King, who had come down the steps behind me.

He nodded once, and they let go.

Selma took three steps and sat down on the gravel because her legs would not hold.

I knelt in front of her, ignoring my back.

"Who did this?"

"Strake's beta," she said. "He caught me at the corner and asked me what I'd said to you at the cannery."

"You said you hoped I'd get a mate."

"I said that at the gate. A wolf heard me. They heard it as a curse on the King."

"It was on me, not on him."

"They don't care," Selma said. "He said I was a mouthy mark who needed reminding whose I am."

Her hand went to the scar on her neck.

I had never looked at it closely.

It was two neat crescents, pale pink, healed shut.

"Selma," I said. "Why do you let him?"

She stared at me with her one open eye.

"Let him?"

"You said yes. You could have said no. You know what happens to a mark you didn't agree to."

For a moment I thought she would hit me.

Then she laughed, one broken sound.

"Macy," she said. "I never said yes."

The gravel was cold through my knees.

"What?"

"He stopped me in the hall of the old school. He put his hand flat on the wall by my head and said, 'You're mine now.' That was all."

She was shaking.

"I told him no. I said no three times. He said my little sister was eight and she had a nice back to practice on, and did I want to change my answer."

I could not breathe.

"I said yes after that," Selma said. "I said yes to save her. He marked me in the supply closet with the door open. Nothing happened to him. Nothing happens to them."
