Chapter 19: Gloves Off

Sunniva dropped the bottle and came at me with her mouth open and her bare hand curled.

She was faster than anything that tall had a right to be.

Her fingernails had gone black and curved, and they caught my sleeve and tore it from wrist to elbow.

I did the only thing I know how to do with a large animal that has decided to hurt me.

I grabbed the blanket off the cot and threw it over her head.

"Get off!" she shrieked, muffled and furious.

"Sit," I said.

I wrapped both arms around her through the wool and went down on top of her.

It is how you pin a Great Dane that has bitten a vet.

She bucked, and I held.

She was stronger than I was, and she knew it, and she screamed it into the blanket.

"You filthy, stinking animal doctor!"

"I've been called worse by a Chihuahua."

The door crashed open.

Osmond filled the frame with the captain at his shoulder, and between their legs came a black shape low to the ground.
