Chapter 22: Collar

Nobody in that room moved.

I knelt in the middle of the stone with Haldane's blood drying on my forearms.

Two hundred pairs of eyes sat on the back of my neck.

"She feels nothing," Brangwen said, from her knees, softly. "She said so herself."

"I did," I said.

"Then she cannot bite."

I looked down at the man on the floor.

He was grey with blood loss and his lips were dry, and he had not said a word.

He lay there with his hand on my wrist, and he did not ask.

"He could have asked me a dozen times," I said, loudly, to the hall.

"In a cellar. In a bed. On the stone, just now, with his shoulder open."

"He never has."

I turned to face the Seal.

"I'm not here because of a pull."

The oldest Elder leaned forward on the dais.

"Then why?"

"Because he's stupid enough to wait," I said.

A ripple of laughter went through the benches, startled and short.

"And because I decide who I want," I said. "I decided on a steel table at dawn, with my hand on his wrist."

"Nobody made me. Nothing did."

I put my palm flat on his chest and felt his heart under it, hard and slow.
