Chapter 23: The Ruling

The Seal Room at dawn was colder than I had ever felt it.

Haldane walked in on his own two feet, in a clean black henley with his left arm in a sling, and the whole room rose.

They did not rise for me, because I was standing at his elbow in jeans with a pen behind my ear.

They rose for him.

Then, one bench at a time, they turned and looked at me and rose again.

I did not know where to put my hands.

"Sit," he murmured. "They're waiting for you to be seated before they can."

I sat in the chair beside the king's, and two hundred wolves sat down at once.

The oldest Elder stood on the dais with the third Elder beside him and an empty seat where Brangwen's chair had been.

"Bring them in," he said.

The captain brought Brangwen through the east door, with her hands bound behind her and her crown braid hanging in a rope down her back.

Behind her, in a grey shift, came Sunniva.

They had taken her gloves, her hairpins and her silks.

Her fingers hung at her sides, blue-black to the knuckle, and she was looking at the floor.

"Brangwen Waverly," said the Elder.

"You are found, on the word of nine witnesses and your own daughter, to have contrived the death of the king."
