Chapter 12: The Old Branches
"Tell them congee in an hour," Wenzhou called through the door.
The housekeeper's footsteps went away.
Rongan lay on his stomach in the red-sheeted bed, with the morning grey at the shutters and Lu's whisper still sitting in his head.
He did not move. Behind him, the mattress dipped.
"We have an hour," said Wenzhou, close to his ear. "On your hands and knees, Captain."
"Wenzhou..."
"Please."
It was the first time he had said please. Rongan rolled over and obeyed.
He knelt at the edge of the bed with his forearms on the quilt and his face turned to the wall.
Wenzhou stood on the floor behind him. At that height, with Rongan kneeling, they were exactly level.
Two hands settled on the backs of his thighs and parted them.
"Relax."
"I am."
"You aren't." The hands stroked upward over his hips. "You haven't been since the ball. Let me help."
Rongan said nothing.
The mattress shifted. He felt warm breath against the cleft of his body, and then, shockingly, a mouth.
