Chapter 21: The Tie
Rongan carried him up the last flight in his arms and through the empty executive corridor.
The secretaries stood and stared and sat down very fast.
Nobody laughed. Nobody said a word.
The chairman's office on the thirty-first floor had a wall of glass and the whole harbor behind it.
Rongan set him down on his feet in the middle of the carpet, and Wenzhou's knees gave.
"I've got you."
"I know. Give me a moment."
Wenzhou pressed both hands over his face.
"I have never in my life been so afraid. I called them, Rongan. I asked."
"I saw," said Rongan.
"I was certain they wouldn't come. I was certain..."
"They came." Rongan pulled the hands away and held them. "They came for you. They'd have come if I'd never been born."
Wenzhou looked up at him.
His glasses were crooked. His eyes were wet. He looked younger than twenty-eight, and entirely undone.
"Kiss me," he said.
Rongan kissed him.
It was slow and deep and shaking, and it went on a long time.
Wenzhou's fingers clawed at his jacket and dragged it down his arms.
"Off. All of it."
"Here?"
"Here. The door is locked, and I am the chairman." A shadow of the old dryness crept back into his voice. "Strip, Captain."
