Chapter 18: Witness
Gareth was the first one there.
He came out of the library at a run and went down on his knees on the flagstones beside her.
"Don't move her," Prue snapped, already shoving through the ten. "Nobody touch her neck."
"Get away from her," Gareth said.
"I'm the healer. You get away from her."
Lavinia clung to Gareth's coat and sobbed.
"She pushed me. She put both hands on me and pushed."
Every face in the cloister turned up the stairs.
I was still standing on the landing.
My hands were at my sides. I looked down at them, because suddenly I wasn't sure.
Then Alaric was beside me.
I hadn't heard him come. He put himself between me and the drop, the way he had in the hut.
He didn't touch me.
He breathed in once, long and slow, and his eyes went silver.
"She's lying," he said. "I can smell it from here."
"Of course he'd say that," said Gareth.
The princess held her hearing in the great hall at four o'clock.
She sat at the head of the long table where we'd eaten the honey cake two nights before.
The candles from the wedding supper were still on it, burned down to stubs.
