Chapter 20: Bad Grammar

The whole ballroom looked at my hand.

I felt the ring go cold on my finger.

Alaric didn't move.

He reached inside his collar and drew out a cord, and on the end of it hung a small disk of dark mountain iron.

He held it up so the room could see the wolf track cut into its face.

"That's my seal," he said. "It's been around my neck since I was made Alpha."

"Then you don't deny it," said Gareth.

"I deny everything else on that paper. I haven't read it yet."

A Councilor laughed.

Above the dais, the King lifted one finger.

The room went quiet.

"The princess's translator is here, I believe," the King said. "Let her read it."

Gareth's face didn't change.

But his hand stayed on the paper a breath too long before he let it go.

A footman carried it across the floor to me on a silver tray.

I took it.

I stood under the great chandelier with six hundred people watching, and read it.

It was Eastmarch.

It was perfectly correct Eastmarch.

That was the first thing wrong with it.

By the third line, my heart was going so hard I was afraid they could all hear it.

By the end, I knew.

I looked up.

Gareth was watching me with his calm, kind face.
