Chapter 32: Three Years
I signed first.
My own name, in my own hand, on the Kingdom side.
Wynne Kerne, Envoy of the King.
The princess melted the red wax and pressed her father's seal into it beside my name.
Alaric took the cord from around his neck.
He held the little iron disk over the black wax while it was still soft, and looked at me.
"Last chance," he said. "You can still go home."
"I am home," I said. "Press it."
He pressed it.
The wolf track sat in the black wax, deep and clean.
Up in the bell tower, someone had been waiting for exactly that.
The bell began to ring.
Up on the Ferris Pass, a wolf howled, and then another, and then the whole mountain was howling back.
The princess closed the leather case.
"Three years," she said. "That was the term."
"I know."
"Don't make me find another translator."
"You'll never find one who talks like a goatherd's widow," said Alaric.
The three years went by faster than the six had.
In the spring, the summer fairs came back to the high meadows.
My grandmother went home to Highmoor village and argued with everybody in it, and drove her neighbour's sheep up to the first fair herself.
