Chapter 9: Three Rules

Gideon knelt in the gravel with his hands open on his thighs.

No one on Willow Lane said a word.

An Alpha on his knees in front of his Luna was something none of them had ever seen, wolf or human.

"Get up," Delaney hissed. She hurried to him and grabbed his arm. "Gideon, get up. People are watching you."

He didn't move.

"Let go of me, Laney."

"You're making a scene."

"I know."

He didn't look at her. He looked at me, and his eyes were wet.

"Tell me what you want," he said. "Anything. Say it, and I'll do it."

I looked down at him over my grandmother's gate.

I had imagined this moment a hundred ways. In none of them did it make me feel better.

"I'm not coming home," I said. "I'm not saying yes to anything. Understand that first."

"I understand."

"You don't, but you will. You can stay on this road tonight on three conditions. Break one, and you get in that truck and never come back."

He nodded once.

"One," I said. "No contact with Delaney. Not a call, not a text, not a message through Toby. If she needs something, someone else answers."

Delaney's mouth opened.

"Gideon, she can't ask you that. I'm family to you. My father died for you."

"Quiet, Laney," he said, without turning his head.

It was the first time in six years he had spoken to her that way.

She went very still.

"Two," I said. "You don't come past this gate. Not into the yard, not onto the porch. Wherever I am, you stay on the other side."

"Done."

"Three."

I laid my hand over my stomach, and watched his eyes follow it.

"You do not touch this. Not my belly, not my waist, not through my coat. You feel it through the bond because you can't help that. But you don't put your hand on it. It isn't yours to claim. Not tonight, and maybe not ever."
