Chapter 17: Not a Contract

I got out of bed with the quilt around me and walked to the door.

Eleven old wolves in the frost looked at my bare feet and my bare shoulders, and not one of them looked away.

"Neither," I said.

The old man with the cane raised his white brows.

"Explain."

"I was hired for a year, for a fruit. I took it, and I used it, and the debt is closed. Ashfall got a poisoner caught, a war with Stonehollow ended, and a Council petition torn up in the dirt."

"That's a lot to call a debt," said the woman who had voted for me.

"Then it's paid twice."

Kellan stood beside me, very still.

I didn't look at him.

"The contract ends today," I said. "I won't be your luna for a year and I won't be your luna for a price."

A mutter went along the row.

"If I stay at all," I said, "it will be because somebody asked me, and I said yes."

The old man leaned on his cane and studied me for a long moment.

"Well," he said at last. "That's the first honest answer anyone's given this pack in forty years."

He turned and began down the path.

The others went after him, murmuring.

The woman who had voted for me looked back over her shoulder and winked.

Kellan shut the door.

I stood there with the quilt held up in both fists, and the cold from the glass struck my back.

"You didn't ask me first," he said.

"No."

"You made that speech in front of eleven elders."
