Chapter 11: The Tin

By noon the old wolves had gathered around the Ridge Stone in their blankets.

Bjorn had called them.

Forty elders sat in a ring on the wet grass.

I stood on the grey rock with my hands shaking.

My grandfather sat on a folding chair at the foot of it, with his horn in his lap.

"You'll have it all," he said. "Then you'll decide what to do. I won't decide it for you."

"Start with why."

"Why you?" he said. "Or why quiet?"

"Both."

He took a long breath.

"The Voice came down to me from my mother," Bjorn said.

"It sits with one Bostrom at a time."

"When I tired, at fifty, I lent the pack to your father."

"I thought the Voice would pass on its own, to whichever of us woke sharpest."

"It didn't pass to Dad."

"It waited. Then you turned seventeen."

"And my senses woke."

"All at once. You heard the sea from your bed."

He rubbed his eyes.

"I knew it that night. So did your father."

I looked down at the old wolves.

Several of them nodded.

They had known it too.

"The week after," Bjorn said, "Arne's orders stopped working."

"Stopped how?"

"He told the sentries to stand down from the shore gate. They stayed."

"He told the baker to open early. The baker slept in."

"He said sit, and nobody sat."

My grandfather's voice shook.

"He did not have the Voice, and everyone could hear it, and nobody said a word."

"So he whispered."

"If you whisper, nobody can tell an order failed."

I thought of the cold store and its stone walls.

I thought of every breath I had drawn with a hand ready to cover my mouth.

"And the healer?" I said.

"Sunniva told the family your senses were cursed."
