Chapter 20: The Vote

The pack stood in a ring on the plank floor of the hall, and every face turned toward me.

I stood in the middle of it with my hands in the pockets of my camel coat, and Lorcan stood a step behind my shoulder.

The old woman with the white braid came forward.

She held a shallow wooden bowl with thirty-one small stones in it, white and gray.

"Steward," she said. "Before the moon, the pack asks."

"What does it ask?"

"What you will do when the year ends."

The room went quiet enough that I heard the fire shift.

"It ends in October," I said. "That is a long way off."

"The moon is tomorrow night. We want to know your answer."

"You want a promise."

"We want you to say it to our faces."

I looked around the ring.

I looked at Bess, who was biting her lip.

I looked at men and women I had met a month ago, with their wary faces and their stew and their stubborn, sweet loyalty.

"Lorcan swore he would not ask me for anything I hadn't asked for," I said.

"Yes."

"He has kept it every day, in front of you and in private."

I turned my head.

He had not moved.

His eyes were on the floor, and his jaw was set, and I saw him brace for it.

"Lorcan," I said. "Look at me."

He looked.

"At the moon, in front of everyone, you will ask me."

The breath left him all at once.

"You're telling me."

"I'm telling you. That's all I'm saying tonight. The answer is for the moon."
