Chapter 10: The Bounty

The hunters found me on the fourth day, in the alley behind the fish stalls.

Two Stonehaven wolves in leather jackets stepped out from either side of me, smiling the way people smile at a paycheck.

I knew one of them by sight. He had delivered lab supplies to my door for three years.

"Miss Greaves," he said. "Nothing personal. The Alpha's offering the port."

"He's offering you the port," I said. "He isn't offering me anything."

"Come quiet and nobody gets bruised."

The second one reached for my arm.

I looked down at his hand, and my wolf lifted her head.

I felt it in my teeth and in the back of my skull.

The gold came up behind my eyes, hot and bright.

"Take your hand off me," I said.

He did not.

He closed his fingers harder, and I turned my wrist inside his grip and broke the hold.

Then I put him into the stall wall.

Crates of ice and fish fell over, and he slid down the boards with an expression of pure astonishment.

The delivery man swung at me.

I caught his fist in my open palm, and my claws were already out.

I did not use them.

I just held him there, and he looked into my face.

Every drop of color left his skin.

"Your eyes," he said hoarsely. "Those are..."

"Say it."

"They're an Alpha's eyes."

The other man crawled to his knees, staring, with fish scales in his hair.
