Chapter 5: Honeymoon Gift

Corbin kicked open the lab door two days later, with his tie already loosened.

"Pack a bag. You're coming with me to the San Juan Islands."

My shoulder still ached from the wolfsbane. I set down my test tube and faced him.

"Why?"

"The honeymoon we never took." He said it proudly. "The jet is on the summit airstrip."

A honeymoon.

In four years of marriage in the dark, it was the first time he had ever said the word.

I used to dream about a trip like this. Every time I asked, he told me the pack came first.

Now the pack had put silver in my shoulder, and he wanted to buy me off for leaving me at the clinic.

I almost refused.

Then I thought of his tablet.

Everything about the border route had been written on it, and a tablet kept logs. Somebody had opened that file, and the logs would say who.

"Fine," I said. "Give me ten minutes."

On the flight I sat across the aisle from him with my hands folded.

When he dozed off against the window, I lifted the tablet out from under his arm and copied its access logs onto a drive no bigger than my thumbnail.

He didn't stir. He had always slept deeply around me.

The resort stood on a private cove, all glass and cedar.

A butler led us up a long staircase to the top suite and opened the double doors with a bow.

The air that rolled out was sweet and heavy.

Hyacinths.

There were a hundred of them, in blue glass vases on every surface, and the scent filled the room.
