Chapter 8: The Empty Penthouse

Corbin's POV

The helicopter put me down on the Tower roof at three in the morning, and the penthouse door was standing open.

The hall light was off.

The only light came from the fireplace in the big room, where the last coals were glowing red.

I walked in and my boots left prints in something dark on the rug.

It was blood.

There was a long smear of it from the couch to the wall, and a dry spatter on the carpet where someone had lain.

The room did not answer.

My wolf was hurling himself against my ribs, raving, clawing at me from the inside, and the pain of it nearly cracked the bone.

Four years I had kept her in my bed and thought of it as a given.

I had never once asked what would happen if she was not there.

"She didn't just leave," I said. My voice came out as a roar. "She planned this. Vaughn! Find out how long she planned it, and who helped her!"
