Chapter 20: The Border

Evander's POV

I brought six thousand riders to the Fenmark border, and I told every one of them to stay on their horses.

They stood along the ridge in the dusk, in ranks that ran back into the dark.

Below us the brown hills of Fenmark rolled away to a black speck on the horizon.

That was the Iron Hall.

Somewhere in it was the woman I loved, who had told me to wait outside.

"The scouts say one road in," said my marshal, a hard grey man who had served my father for thirty years. "One gate. Three hundred spearmen on the wall."

"Yes."

"We could take it by midnight."

"Yes."

"Then give the order, Majesty. Your father would have had that hall burning an hour ago."

I looked at him.

"My father burned a hall," I said, "and look where it put me."

The marshal's mouth closed.

A Fenmark herald rode up the ridge under a white cloth, alone, and stopped a spear's length from my horse.

"My King sends you a gift, Majesty," he said. "The tax of the Moon lands for twenty years, in gold, if the High Crown goes home."

"Is that the price of her mother?"

"It's the price of your peace."

"Tell your King I took the Moon lands from nobody," I said. "I gave them back. He has nothing to sell me."

The herald went white and rode away.

I felt it first in my chest.

It came from the north, a hard cold pull, and my wolf went down on his belly inside me and whined.

Something had closed around her.
