Chapter 17: The Moot Ground
The moot ground lay in a bowl of meadow above Blackmoor Hall, ringed by the nine stones.
Five hundred wolves stood on the slopes around it, and not one of them made a sound.
The east-range Alpha stood at the center with her hands folded.
"Tooth and claw," she said. "No weapon, no help, no word from the slope."
"It ends when one of you yields with her belly or her mouth. Nobody enters the ring."
She looked at me.
"Last chance to withdraw the claim, Keeper. No one would call it cowardice."
"I'm not withdrawing anything."
"No," she said. "I didn't think so."
Linus gripped my sleeve with his good hand, and I peeled his fingers off one by one.
"If it goes badly, you don't step over the line," I told him.
"I won't," he whispered.
Fergus stood at the edge of the slope with his glasses folded in his fist, and said nothing.
Eamon stood a few yards from him, bareheaded, hands hanging at his sides.
I did not look at either of them again.
I walked into the ring and put down my father's coat.
