Chapter 4: Soup With Camille

The black wolf was gone by the time I finished washing my face.

Joss stood in the doorway with his coffee and stared at the flattened patch of dirt on my porch.

"He said he'd stay off my land," I said.

"That wasn't him," Joss said. "That was the other one. Torin would call it a technicality."

"There's no other one. It's one wolf."

"Sure," Joss said, in the voice of a man who had stopped arguing about it years ago.

I decided not to chase that.

I had a valley to save, and I didn't know how.

Around noon a small grey car came crunching up the gravel.

The guards at the gate stepped aside to let it through, and Camille Roswell got out with two grocery bags and a duffel on her shoulder.

I stood on the porch with my arms crossed.

"I know," Camille said, before I could say anything. "I know I shouldn't be here. I'll leave if you say so."

She looked tired. She had no makeup on, and her pale hair was pulled into a plain knot.

"I told Winifred last night that it was too much," she said. "I told her before the toast. She said it was only for the council, and I believed her, and then she hit you. I'm so sorry, Orla."

I thought about the cloakroom, and the zipper, and the text.

I thought about how fast and gentle she had been with my stuck zipper.

"You didn't hit me," I said.

"I stood there."

"So did three hundred other people."

She laughed, a small wet laugh, and held out the bags.

"I brought soup things. I don't know what you like."
