Chapter 18: Door Log
By the time I looked back at the landing, the stairwell door was swinging shut.
Saskia was gone.
"Let her," the RA said. "I want you upstairs in the lounge. All of us. Tonight."
"Why?"
"Because I owe you a speech, and I'd like to give it in front of the people who watched me tell you to let it go."
At eight o'clock the third-floor lounge was full.
Sixty people sat on couches, on the carpet and along the windowsill, and Casper had set up his tripod by the door.
The RA stood in front of the television with a folder in her hands.
She was a senior, with a ponytail and a stern, tired face, and the whole floor had always done what she said.
"I'm going to say something once," she said. "I told Jessa that her laptop was just a thing. I said it was part of living with other people. I said she should let it go."
Nobody breathed.
"Her roommate smashed her work with a lamp while her whole floor watched," the RA said. "And my advice was to bring her tea."
The girl from 3C pushed up off the couch.
"I said it too," she said. "I told her anyone can buy a new laptop."
"Then I lent her my tablet set and said I'd just buy another," she went on. "When it was smashed on camera, I found out I couldn't. I've been eating ramen for a week."
A few people laughed, and then stopped.
"I wanted her to drop it," the girl from 3C said, "because I was afraid I'd be next. That's the real reason. If you tell the person who got hurt to be quiet, you don't have to look at what happened."
