Chapter 19: Bayview Holdings
"I know that address," Megan said.
She put her finger on it.
"It's on Long Lake. It's the house Shane rented in June." She swallowed. "He told my mom it was for you two. For after the wedding. A place to get away from the farm."
"He never told me about a lake house."
"He said it was a surprise."
Everything was a surprise with Shane.
Megan went and got her laptop.
She sat at the kitchen table and typed with her left hand, fast, chewing her lip.
Gran and I stood behind her.
The state keeps a list of every company anybody starts.
Megan found it in about four minutes.
Bayview Holdings, LLC. Filed June twenty-eighth.
Five days before my wedding.
Registered address: the house on Long Lake.
There were two names on the filing.
Shane Hollander.
And a lawyer in Chicago, at an address on Wacker Drive.
I'd seen that address yesterday morning on a business card on my counter.
"That's the Prentiss building," I said.
"So Shane picked the house," Megan said slowly. "And Luke's father paid for the note."
